Mastering Backstroke: Importance of Head Position

Poolside I emphasise the importance of the Head Position with the chest and hips level. Some swimmers develop a habit of dipping down or turning their head as they kick and breathe. I often use plastic cups as a drill to work on this. With 2cm of water in the cup they have to balance this on their forehead and swim backstroke for several lengths.

Young swimmers have to be reminded of the need to stay on the correct side of the lane, swimming in the prescribed direction – clashes of heads, worse if wearing fins, are always unpleasant.

We will work on the number of strokes from the 5m flags and then try and building confidence with their backstroke turn.
